SM hosts 2014 Green Retail Agenda forum

The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the business sector must be resilient in case a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hits Metro Manila.

Phivolcs director Dr. Renato Solidum Jr. explained that a critical factor in preparing for incidents in the Fifth Green Retail Agenda led recently by SM Supermalls, through SM Cares, at the SMX Mall of Asia was the West Valley Faul.

Solidum said that they expect the West Valley Fault to move within our lifetime. According to Solidum, the last major earthquake took place in 1658 or 356 years ago.

With the theme “The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction”, SM Supermalls encouraged stakeholders and also the government to invest more in disaster-risk reduction efforts.

President of SM Supermalls Annie Garcia explains that there is greater need to make business disaster resilient because in the past 20 years approximately half of the major natural disasters occurred in Asia, including the Philippines.

Garcia said that the impacts of disasters have become a growing concern not only with the government but especially in the private sector. That they have all suffered the devastating effects of natural disasters.
