Mayon Volcano erupts softly, says Governor

Albay Gov Joey Salceda reiterated that Mayon Volcano is going through a soft eruption, with lava flowing.

Because of expected eruption of Mayon Volcano, the government has already evacuated residents living inside the 6-km danger zone around the volcano. Around 63,000 people were moved to the evacuation areas as a pre-emptive move by the government, avoiding fatal occurrence.

Mayon started to spew out white smoke and lava last month. On Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has confirmed that the Mayon has appeared to quiet down but a fresh cascade going down the slopes has prompted concerns about an imminent major eruption.

“The first activity started on Sept. 15 and lasted for a few days. After that, there was a lull or no summit activity, but this morning, our volcanologists spotted a lava flow,” Renato Solidum, head of the Phivolcs, told a television station ABS-CBN.

He said magma inside the volcano was now rising to the summit slowly but added that it could accelerate, prompting quakes and small explosions and potentially causing a much larger eruption.

Furthermore, DILG Secretary Mar Roxas was on the scene to restore hope to the evacuees, assuring the government will provide all their needs.

Mayon Volcano alert warning level is at 3. This means that a possible eruption in weeks.
