RPN 9 acquires CNN brand

MANILA – Radio Philippines Network channel 9 (RPN9) has acquired international Cable news channel CNN’s brand.

Owners of RPN9 led by Ambassador Antonio Cabangon-Chua entered into a partnership with CNN of Time Warner Inc. With this partnership 9TV network, formerly Solar News TV will be rebranded as CNN Philippines starting January 2015.

Solar TV Network Inc. and BusinessMirror president Benjamin Ramos confirmed the reports that 9TV will be rebranded as CNN Philippines. “We confirm report that 9TV will be rebranded as CNN Philippines,” he said.
Online news network Media Newser Philippines earlier reported that the partnership will see 9TV carry CNN’s international news coverage and current programs to free TV. In return, 9TV will generate reports on the Philippines for CNN.

It added that both networks will also share their reporting to various CNN bureaus for big stories.The partnership between RPN9 and CNN is expected to be formalized within the week and the deal is expected to be formally announced in a press conference in October 14 in Manila.

The entry of CNN Philippines with partnership with 9TV could provide a competition to top two TV network ABS-CBN and GMA.

RPN9’s franchise was estimated to cost P800 million while IBC 13’s physical assets and franchise was valued at P1.2 billion.
