Alaska nips SMB as Banchero explodes

Manila, Philippines – Rookie guard Chris Banchero delivered an all-around performance to help Alaska in a 107-100 victory over San Miguel on Tuesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Banchero had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists in keeping SMB winless in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Banchero utilized his speed against the defense of the Beermen to get his numbers.

Import DJ Covington scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to be the strong forced inside. Dondon Hontiveros added 17 points and drilled in important free throws for Alaska.

Forward Calvin Abueva sparked the Aces in scoring with 12 points. His presence had significantly altered the complextion of the game. Abueva’s isolation plays were instrumental for Alaska’s offensive juggernaut. Cyrus Baguio contributed 10 points for the Aces. Alaska has improved to 2-2 while San Miguel is winless at 0-4.

The Beermen were reluctant to give up through import Ronald Roberts who scored 27 points. Meanwhile, June Mar Fajardo and Chris Lutz struggled to bring up their best in the ballgame.

One of the brightest spots for the Beermen was Marcio Lassiter who knocked four 3-pointers in the first half. SMB had the lead in the first half, 50-49.

“Felt like we really needed to win,” said Alaska head coach Alex Compton. “Today, we played better. I thought we had contributions from all around.”
