Senate probe starts Monday on the Mamasapano encounter that kille 44 SAF commandos

The Senate will begin its inquiry on the death of at least 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos in an encounter with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters las January 25, 2015.

The committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs will be joined by the committee on Finance and the committee of Peace, Unification and Reconciliation in the probe to determine what really happened in that what is called ‘misencounter’ or ‘massacre’.

It is unclear to the public who approved the operation in that encounter that took the lives of 44 SAF members. Aside from the 44 dead on the PNP side, 18 Moro guerrillas and five civilians were accounted to be killed.

President Aquino and resigned PNP Director Alan Purisima are being dragged as the persons who gave the command for the said operation which targeted Zulkifli bin Hir a.k.a. Marwan , who was killed by the commandos, and Filipino terrorist Basit Usman, who is still at large.

Meanwhile, Purisima, sacked SAF Director Getulio Napenas and survivor PO2 Christopher Lalan confirmed their presence as resource speakers to give clarity to what really transpired in the event. Moreover, Supt. Raymond Train, head of the 84th SAF Company that dispatched Marwin will be in the hearing.

DILG Secreatry Mar Roxas and PNP OIC Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina, who claimed no knowledge about the operation, will also be in the senate hearing.

Big names in the military like Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., chief of Staff of the AFP and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin are expected to show up.

The senate probe on the Mamasapano encounter will start at 10:00 PM at the Session Hall 2/F Left Wing, Senate.
