Tour de France Stage 3 Results and Standings: Froome takes yellow, Rodriguez wins crash-marred stage

Veteran Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain captured the bloody-marred stage 3 of the Tour de France while Chris Froome took second place to wear the yellow jersey.

In a stage that was embroiled with crash that occurred 37 miles left, the stage had to be neutralized and stopped for about 20 minutes as the organizers allowed those who were involved to catch up.

“This was an exceptional decision due to exceptional circumstances,” Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said. “All our ambulances and medical vehicles were mobilized at the back of the race because of the crashes. The riders at the front would have been without assistance if we had not stopped the peloton.”

The high-speed crash on Monday caused 20 riders to fall off their bikes. The stage featured four short climbs. However, the crash happened before any of those when Frenchman William Bonnet went down and several riders hit around him.

The good news, all the contenders are remained to be safe as they avoided the crash.

“It’s never too early to take the yellow jersey,” Froome said. “Really happy to come second and put more time on my GC [general classification] contenders. I was in front [of the crash] and just heard about it on the radio.”

In the general classification, Alberto Contador is now 36 seconds behind Froome, while Vincenzo Nibali is behind with 1′ 32″.
