College Football AP Poll Week 1 Standings: Ohio State captures No. 1, Alabama at No. 2, 10 SEC Teams in Top 25

The Ohio State Buckeyes stayed at No. 1 in the first AP Poll released on Tuesday. The Buckeyes rallied from a 17-14 deficit to beat the Virginia Tech Hokies, 42-24, on Monday night.

Surprisingly, the SEC garnered 10 of the 25 spots in the Top 25 that was released. In the preseason, eight teams were in the Top 25 but the win of Texas A&M and Mississippi State increased the numbers of the SEC teams to 10.

Alabama jump up a spot to No. 2. The rest of the SEC roll call is: No. 6 Auburn, No. 10 Georgia, No. 14 LSU, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 18 Arkansas, No. 20 Missouri and No. 23 Tennessee.

Teams dropping out of the rankings were Arizona State and Stanford, part of a lackluster 7-5 start to the season for the Pac-12. Wisconsin also dropped out of the rankings after losing to Alabama.

Despite of the SEC’s dominance in the AP Poll, the current College Football Playoff format might be detrimental to the conference because of each team’s brutal schedule. SEC teams have to play against each other throughout the season and it is hard to be undefeated.
