Alaska strengthens spot, eliminates Mahindra


The Alaska Aces played big in the 4th quarter to grab a share of 2nd spot in the PBA by defeating Mahindra Floodbuster 107-91 victory in the PBA Philippines Cup  at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Vic Manuel and Calvin Abueva sustained there energetic play, as Manuel surprised the fans with off the bench score, finishing at a team-high 20 points and Abueva poured in 18 points, 10 boards, 3 blocks, 1 assist and 1 steal in 27 minutes.

The head coach of Alaska Aces, Alex Compton said while praising the rooster –  

We’re in a little bit of transition in terms of our veterans and leaders. We have tri-captains now, it’s JVee (Casio), RJ (Jazul) and Calvin now,”

“I thought calvin did some great things that you guys didn’t see.”

“I don’t think Mahindra has a ‘give up’ in them,” “They certainly gave me a few more gray hairs today.” Compton added mentioning great play by Floodbuster,

The Aces pushed a 76-deadlock to a 97-81 blowout with Abuja’s endless energy rubbing off his playmates and old timers Sonny Thoss, Tony dela Cruz and Dondon Hontiveros helping the team to rise.

As a result, the Aces improved to their 5-4 win loss record, while Floodbuster with the 7th loss in 9 games are eliminated from the playoff along with NLEX and Meralco.

“I’m grateful to have those guys on our team and they made plays for the team,” Compton said

Alex Mallari led the Mahindra Floodbuster with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, while Gilas cadet Russel Escoto comparatively played his best game so far and dropped 16 off the bench.
