Brownlee explodes to help Ginebra beat GlobalPort

Justin Brownlee scored 39 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Barangay Ginebra in a 96-85 win over GlobalPort and advanced to the semifinal round in the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Tuesday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Brownlee was hot from outside the arc, hitting 7-for-11, to separate Ginebra in the third quarter. The 6-foot-5 import was also active on the defensive side in containing the opponents. The game was tight in the third quarter when GlobalPort was just six points behind, 56-60, before Brownlee supplied the Kings with three 3-pointers for the 20-1 spurt, bringing the score to 76-51 with 79 seconds left in the third quarter.

Japeth Aguilar posted 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks to lead the locals for Ginebra. Ginebra coach Tim Cone even acknowledged that Aguilar made the difference in the game.

“I think the game turned when Japeth began dominating the paint in the third quarter. He blocked shots, he changed shots, and I thought that really made the difference for the game. And when Justin is knocking down his shots, that helps a lot. But I thought the defense of Japeth was the key on what we needed in this game,” Cone said.

LA Tenorio had 12 points and eight assists while Scottie Thompson added 11 points and 12 rebounds to help Barangay Ginebra. Tenorio got an altercation with Terrence Romeo, who was ejected for whipping Tenorio’s waist.

Justin Harper had 29 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Batang Pier. Romeo scored 22 points while Stanley Pringle added 16 points and five rebounds.
