SCEW Club screws it up, elderly discount card a scam?

The Senior Citizen and Elderly Welfare Club of the Philippines (SCEW) was hidden in the limelight before a member blew it up by posting in social media that the card works for discount at a fast food restaurant.

SCEW Club national president Restituto Perez Jr. needed to explain and he said on GMA’s 24 Oras that it is not a discount card. Perez also aded that the SCEW Club is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and already has 100,000 members.

“Wala kaming pera talaga eh.

While SCEW advocates the provision of similar privileges for its younger members—”junior citizens”—in the 40–59 age range, the SCEW card only entitles its holders to livelihood, medical, and burial assistance.

Is this a scam?

Before it was circulated in the news, the card really works for 20% discount in restaurants. The card even invoked the benefits and previleges under Republic Act No. 9994. Here are the benefits and privileges that is writted at the back of a SCEW Club card:

* Free Medical/Dental, Diagnostic & Laboratory Service in all Government facilities.

* 20 % Discount in Purchase for Medicines, Essential Supplies, Accessories and Equipment including Prescribe Vitamins.

* 20 % Discount in Hotels, Restaurants, Recreation Centers, Funeral Parlors and similar establishments.

* 20 % Discounts in Theaters Cinema Houses & Concert Hall etc.
* 20 % Discount in Medical Dental Services Diagnostics and Laboratory fees in private facilities.
* 20 % Discount in Fare for Domestic Air, Sea Travel & Public Land Transportations.
* 5% Discount on Purchase of Basic Goods up to $1,300/week
* 12 % VAT-Exemption on Purchase of Goods & services which are entitled to the 20% discount
* 5% Discount on Light & Water for consumption up to 100KW & 30 cu. m. for registered Senior Citizens.

It is highlighted:

Persons and Corporations violating RA 9994 shall be penalized. This ID Card is exclusive for Senior Citizens and Elderly Welfare Club of the Philippines. Abuse of privileges is PUNISHABLE law.

At the bottom of the card it says:

As per Resolution No. 07-2017, a Member must be 40-59 years old as Elderly and 60 yards old and above as Senior Citizen.

By the marketing strategy of SCEW, detailing about those benefits at the back of the card, with the backing up of those who really experience discounts, then it would be easy to recruit members. No wonder the SCEW Club has attracted 100,000 members. Aside from the P300 first payment, an additional P350 is to be paid for the promised medical booklet.

Now that all those business and medical establishments know about SCEW ID, the members could no longer show the card to avail discount.

The SCEW Club Card is a deceptive act itself and its main intention is to captivate others to join. If there’s already 100,000 members, that’s equivalent to P 30 million – that’s a lot of money!

A notice to the public was released by the Department of Trade and Industry about the SCEW Club.

It has come to our knowledge that a certain entity, Senior Citizen and Elderly Welfare Club of the Philippines Inc. (SCEW Club), offers discount booklets using the name of the Department of Trade and Industry for Php 350.00 that extends the claiming eligibility of senior citizen discounts to 40-59 years old.

Please be WARNED that no such authority is granted by the Department and the law to SCEW Club. We have raised this matter to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for investigation and appropriate action.

SCEW Club holders may not know about the truthfulness of the benefits; they tried it and it worked until the news erupted!

Top Online Stores in the Philippines: Lazada leads?

YES, I CAN DO IT!

YES, I CAN DO IT!

“The Power of Positive Thinking”

May tatlong A’s na dapat nating malaman tungkol sa power of positive thinking.

  1. Attitude.

  1. Negatively Charged particles, Electrons
  2. Neutrally Charged particles, Neutrons and
  3. Positively Charged particles, Protons

Points to Ponder:

Be part of the TEAM POSITIVE or TEAM PROTONS and declare Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength!”

I LOVE MY FAMILY

I LOVE MY FAMILY

“No other place like home”

  1. Ang pagsunod sa magulang ay isa sa mga mahirap gawin lalo na kung emosyon ang pinaiiral ng isang anak. Naririnig mo na ba sa kanila ang mga kataga tulad ng;
  • Mag-aral muna bago manligaw o magpaligaw?
  • Gawaing bahay muna bago maglaro ng computer etc?
  • Bahay muna bago barkada? At marami pang iba.

Points to Ponder:

John 15:5.

THE POWER OF THE TONGUE

THE POWER OF THE TONGUE

“What you confess, you possess”

Proverbs 18:21

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 15:4

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Points to ponder:

Proverbs 12:18

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

LET IT GO!

LET IT GO!

“Take It or Leave It”

–Unknown

Points to Ponder:

  1. “Apologizing does not always mean that you are wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationsgip more than your ego.”- Unknown

FROM THE INSIDE-OUT

FROM THE INSIDE-OUT

Ayon sa mga personality development experts, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” umano. Ibig sabihin nito, may kanya-kanya tayong batayan sa pagsukat sa kagandahan.

 May Dalawang uri ang kagandahan

  • This is temporary because as we grow old, it changes.
  • This is deceptive and sometimes it leads to destruction.

  • It attracts good friends.
  • It brings recognition.

  • “You Can’t Judge a Book by Its Cover
  • “A full-grown butterfly came from an unattractive caterpillar.”

Points to Ponder:

1 Samuel 16:7

“……The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

THE SAMARITAN’S HEART

THE SAMARITAN’S HEART

“Touching others, reaching lives”

Halimbawa: Kaya mo yan friend!    Tiwala lang kay Lord!  Habang may buhay may pag-asa! Ang bawat problema ay may solusyon!
Hindi dapat tayo men pleasers.

Points to ponder:

Sa huli, let us be an encourager, not a source of discouragement!

ONE TEAM, ONE FAMILY

ONE TEAM, ONE FAMILY

“Every part is important”

Points to Ponder:

1 Corinthians 12:26

If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

CONSEQUENCES………SECOND CHANCES

CONSEQUENCES………SECOND CHANCES

“Learn from your mistakes”

  1. Talikuran na ang nakaraan. Past is past, let it go and move on.
  6. Forget about impressing people. “Be a God-pleaser not men-pleaser”.

Points to ponder:

  • Our GOD is a GOD of second chances – Yes, God does these things again and again for people — Job 33:29
  • We all deserve second chances, but not for the same mistake. – Thabiso Owethu Xabanisa

MONEY MATTERS

MONEY MATTERS

“Appraising the value of money”

“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.”

The person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.”

Naipaliwanag na ito sa paksang “You Want More or You Need More? (Weighing your wants and needs). Pangunahing pangangailangan muna bago ang mga kagustuhan.

Points to Ponder:

Proverbs 10:22, “The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.”

FRIENDSHIP NOT FRIEND-SIP

FRIENDSHIP NOT FRIEND-SIP

“Through thick and thin, be the same”

  1. Gawing mabunga ang pagkakaibigan para tumagal ito.
  • Humingi ng tawad at matutong magpatawad.
  • Tanggapin ang kaibigan maging sino pa siya.
  • Bigyang halaga ang komunikasyon.

Points to Ponder:

Jollibee suffers defeat in a trademark battle against Jolliville

The Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) lost a trademark case against property firm Jolliville Holdings Corporation. JFC filed a a case after Jolliville filed for the registration of its name.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) junked Jollibee’s case, saying the names of the two companies are not “confusingly similar.”

“The decision of the BLA director [in September 2014] is incorrect and the appeal is meritorious. The appellant’s [Jolliville] mark is not confusingly similar to appellee’s [Jollibee] marks… There is no ground to prohibit the registration of Jolliville in the name of the appellant,” IPOPHIL said in its 11-page decision dated June 8.

The real state firm name was derived from the name of the company’s founder, Jolly L. Ting, added with a suffix “ville” to tell about the nature of the real state and leasing business it has. The property firm also explained the certificates of registration to the Securities and Exchange Commission that Mr. Ting had been utilizing the “Jolli” prefix since the mid-80’s.

“While appellee [Jollibee] was making it big in the food service business, so was Mr. Jolly L. Ting in the night entertainment business,” the decision read. Mr. Ting also owns night entertainment businesses around Metro Manila, such as: Pegasus, Discovery, Mega, Heartbeat, and Lexus.

Jolliville also said it is now engaged in leasing, management services, property development, land banking, waterworks, business process outsourcing and power generation.

BSP slashes BOP surplus target of $500M for 2016

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has slashed the balance-of-payment (BOP) surplus target for 2016 to $500 Million from earlier assumption of $2 billion because of the lower global growth outlook and uncertainty in the US Federal Reserve policy tightening.

The Balance of Payment of a country displays the transaction with world. Components comprises of trade, portfolio investments, and foreign direct and involved remittances from Filipino abroad. A surplus means more money went into the economy, while a deficit means otherwise.

BSP in May projected $2-billion BOP surplus as of yearend as the double-digit growth in imports to date surpass an expected drop in end this year’s exports, which would pull the current account lower to $2.5 billion, down from last projection of $5.8 billion.

BSP predicts imports growth by 11% and export drop by 3% by year end.

Diwa Guinigundo, the BSP Deputy Governor for Monetary Stability Sector said –

“I think we need to emphasize that 2016, especially in the last quarter of the year, has been particularly challenging. There was a lot of unexpected developments in the market, most of which are anticipated but not in terms of the timing as well as the magnitude of those adjustments,”

Guinigundo noted that business process outsourcing were offering support to weak merchandise exports.

The bank also said the FDI inflows would perk up to $6.7 billion instead of $6.3 billion in 2016, while foreign portfolio investments is expected to book a net outflow of $1.1 billion.
